The Manchester Commission
These tableaux are visual reveries within the enclaves of a Northern metropolis. Walking for many hours, in places that were once familiar, yet now seemed new; all seemed fresh, full of potential, and yet where to begin. Then memory and the imagination came through the cracks to let the light in; they gave shape and depth to the pictures.
I hadn’t been to the city for 33 years; I was here for an art commission. I had an open brief, no art director and ten days to produce 10 large-scale tableaux. I was staying at the Lowry Hotel, a stop over for rock stars, footballers and politicians. I was happy here to be just some guy with a camera.
